Algorithms should be studied. They were writen about in the 800s A.D. by a Persian.

Every July 4th week-end, I try to learn the names of the Presidents of the United States and the year that they either were elected or took office. (There is a difference between learning and memorizing)
The trick is to find a knowable historical event and attach it to the President at the time.
The Louisiana Purchase, the build up to the Civil War, World War I, etc. are examples of historical events which we should all be familiar. The problem for me seems to be Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore or Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison and Grover Cleveland.

PATHFINDER John Charles Fremont and the Course of American Empire by Tom Chafin 2002 Hill and Wang A division of Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Tom and Meta are part of the literatci that have become part of the Manuel's Tavern Myth. This book does what I most enjoy about non-fiction biography and history which is tell the human face about the characters who make our world. The pains, loves, failures, triumphs, talent and luck which make up life need to be included when one tries to tell a complete story about a person. Tom is a gifted scholar and a good story teller. He chose a character who is both important in the American story and someone whose complete story needed to be told.

Last night I went to hear Elvis Costello play in Athens, Georgia for the first time. Great 2 hour set at the Athens Classic Center.

The night before I went to hear Michael Penn at the Red Light Cafe in Atlanta and then the BooHoo Ramblers at Blind Willies.

President W. Bush had what was described as the fourth prime time news conference of his Presidency tonight. I received an e-mail during the 1 hour asking why the networks were televising him. I had hoped to watch ABC television's showing of Sweet Home Alabama starring Reese Witherspoon. I had been paid to be an extra one cold night in Atlanta several years ago to reshoot some scenes of that movie. I never saw it to see if they used any of my cameo appearance. I did meet and chat with Reese that night.

I met Dr. Hunter S. Thompson over twenty years ago in the Memorial Hall ballroom at the University of Georgia. We compared notes and decided it would be a good idea that we should not adventure together. We honored our pact until that faithful night at the Woody Creek Tavern outside of Aspen Colorado when intoxicants resulted in gunplay.

I had agreed to remain silent until his big sleep.

Campaigns pay attention!

When I was supposedly attending the University of Georgia in the 1970's, I ran for Student Body President. On election day, I basically hid under my bed. When the votes were counted later that evening, I missed the run-off by around 100 votes. Most of my aquaintances had failed to vote. A popular t-shirt in college football states: "Finish The Drill."

Less than 100 hours till Election day is supposedly over. (A federal Judge has ruled that overseas uniformed and others have more than a week after that to get their ballots in.)

Stalin has been quoted as saying something about it's not who casts the ballots but it's who counts the votes.

The Brethen by Bob Woodward and Scott Armstrong tells the story of "Inside The Supreme Court." Last Monday was the first session on the new Supreme Court session. Copyright in 1979, this book was written before Ronald Reagan was elected president.

I would like to believe there is a reason for the current court to be resisting retirement, death or disability. The next justice who will be nominated by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate will be examined unlike anybody who has ever offered for public service.

After the Bush v. Gore case of 2000, it could be argued that our American democracy is perched on the precipice.

In the summer of 1990, I traveled to the middle East with a gentleman who has written about the court. Black Hills, White Justice was the first book by Mr. Lazarus which started prying open the secretive deliberations of the U.S. Supreme Court. Closed Chambers came next.
With less then a month before the Presidential election, what role will the nominating of new justices play in the voting choice of the American voting public?

Parliament of Whores by P.J. O'ROURKE may not be the best book to read when one is retiring from 16 years of serving in the Georgia House of Representatives but being unable to schedule a drinking duel with Dr. Hunter S. Thompson at the Woody Creek Tavern outside of Aspen, Colorado, it will have to do for the time being. Searching for private sector employment and reading New Yorker articles is a great distraction from this quad-annual mass hypnotic fooled -you- again that this country insists on pursuing. Democracy is a myth.
